John was placed in a ward with other 30 people. In the morning they were given portions of food to eat. Two hours later another portion was brought and the same happened every two hours till the day ended. In the evening they were washed under showers and allowed to sleep in bunk beds with little space for anything else. They were used to the lack of space. But they weren't used to so much food. Usually, they ate whenever they were hungry but here when someone didn't finish the meal, he was sent back to the table to eat till the bowl was empty. First few days were difficult. Soon their stomachs were enlarged and big portions didn't seem impossible to eat. After a week they felt that the uniforms they had previously got were too small. They couldn't button the shirts and the trousers didn't fit them. They received bigger uniforms. Soon they discovered stretch marks. Their bodies were covered with pink scars in their belly area, arms, tights, bottom, breasts and below their knees. They were significantly gaining weight.

Spaces for sleep also become more cramped as their bodies were bigger. They were sweating more easily, due to the abundance of processed food they had frequent winds and their bedroom ward after the night required two hours of airing to get rid of the smell. After some time they stopped having sex.

'Why do you feed us so much?' John was brave enough to approach one of the guards.

The guard smiled in disbelief that he heard the human talk.

'They said that some of you would be able to speak,' he said, 'Well, if we want to eat you, we want to eat you big, right?'

John gasped at the obvious honesty. The guards weren't even trained to perform their tasks in a humane way. John came back to his bed, losing his breath on the way. His extra kilograms were a strain on his fragile body.

And as he observed the numbness of people around him, he couldn't believe that after years of eating K.s, after years of K. studies, after years of living with K.s, he was to share the K.'s fate as well.
