Gemma woke up in her old room which back then seemed to be a lottery ticket to a better world. Her body was hurting still but there was an enormous power which made her forget about the bruises, wash and eat a meal to regain her strength. There was something which made her forget about the pain she suffered and the humiliation she had to handle. At the end of the day she was a genuine K., and if it hadn't been for Melquiades, she would have been raped countless times by angry men, landlords, or simply would have suffered the pain of dozens of childbirths every year since she turned twelve. You couldn't escape all the life's pain.
She knew that Melquiades went to N., as she saw notes on the table and plans lying on the desk in Melquiades' room. She went to the city center and saw some changes. There were cars, TV sets, furniture. Even people looked different with their renewed clothes and shoes in better condition. She also saw sofas on which sat far too many people watching with open mouth the transmission of one peculiar TV show. Gemma approached one of TV screens and, to her surprise, she saw a scene far more intriguing than she would have ever expected. She saw Jacob sitting by the kitchen table, holding a gun. She heard Melquiades' voice. She looked at people who were talking to themselves and screaming that the food was poisoned and it shouldn't be eaten. She looked at the screen again, this time sure that Melquiades used some equipment to film and transmit the meeting with Jacob, by using the passwords she had provided to him and the intricacies of the system. He managed to connect the TV sets distributed around K. to the hidden camera attached to his clothes to film the truth straight from the source so that no one would doubt its content.
Gemma didn't appreciate the old man. He didn't have to kill Jacob. He killed him in the eyes of his people. And while those who had already seen the transmission were running to each and every flat, telling exactly what they had heard from Jacob, and asking others to further spread the news, Jacob suddenly stood up from behind the table and with a teenager's anger started fighting with his younger brother to the amusement of spectators.
